The members of the SAPS Diving Unit retrieved the body of the missing 6-year-old girl, from Jukskei River next to Lion Park Quarry, about 10 km from where she was reportedly swept by a stream in Diepsloot.
The police were called to the scene after a fisherman had noticed the deceased body, trapped by a pyramid of rubble next to a pedestrian bridge inside the river.
The deceased father confirmed at the scene that the body was that the missing Angela Sibanda.
“The Honeydew Cluster wishes to forward condolences to the family of the deceased. Would also like to thank the community for supporting the search operation since the tragedy struck on Thursday.
We applaud the bravery displayed by our own constables, Albert Ngobeni and Collen Lebyane. Through their actions, another near-drowning incident was averted.
We now declared the Search and Rescue/ Recovery Operation, officially closed”; said SAPS communication officer for Honeydew Cluster Daniel Mavimbela.
The child was swept away by floods on her way home from School last week and the police have been searching for her since until her body was discovered yesterday.
